Geography:

The Republic of China on Taiwan is an island located at the midpoint of the West Pacific Ocean. Its total landscape area is roughly equal to the size of the Netherlands.

Population:

The Republic of China on Taiwan has a population of 21 million and its population density ranks second highest in the world.

Language:

Mandarin is the official language, dialects such as Taiwanese and Hakka are widely spoken. Many people are also fluent in English and Japanese.

Standard of Living:

The per capita income in 1996 was a little more than US$13,000, which ranked as the world‘s 25th highest.

Economic Growth:

In the past forty years, The Republic of China on Taiwan‘s economic growth rate averaged 8.6%. According to the government’s preliminary estimate, in the next 10 years (1996-2006), The Republic of China on Taiwan‘s average economic growth rate will be 6% per annum.

Economic Strength:

The Republic of China on Taiwan is the 14th largest trading nation and it is ranked 9th in terms of the amount of external investment. Furthermore, the GNP of the Republic of China is ranked 19th amongst major economies of the world.
